Translation of 'kaaya hee panDhari' Abhanga

This is the Abhanga sung by Bhimsen Joshi, written by Santa Ekanatha, in this Abhanga Ekanatha  looks the PanDahri in the world, thus essence of worship and pilgrimage in all walks of daily life.

॥१

(kaaya hee panDhari aatmaa haa viTThala, naandato kewaLa paanDuranga)
this body is PanDhari and soul is ViTThala, dwells only PanDuranga there

(bhaava bhakti bheemaa udka te waahe, barawaa shibhatase paanDuranga)
feelings-devotion s the flowing water of Bheema river, suits the stunning, adorable PanDuranga.

(dayaa kshamaa shaanti hechi waaLuwanTa, miLalase thaaTa vaishnavaanchaa)
compassion, forgiveness, peace is the desert (the sandy ground on the banks of Bheema river in PanDharapur) , we got the honour of being Vaishnava (dedicated to god)

(jnaana dhyaana pooja viveka aananda, haachi veNunaada shobhatase)
knowledge, meditation, worship, thoughtfulness and thus happiness is what is the veNunaada – sound of flute (flute is the instrument lord Krishna plays)

(dasha indriyaanchaa eka meLa kelaa, aisaa gopaaLakaalaa hota ase)
ten Indriyas are brought together and that is the gopaaL-kaala here
(GopaaLakaalaa is the mixture of different food items of different tastes, they are believed to be Lord Krishna’s favourite which he shares with his close friends)

Indriya is the Sanskrt-Yogic term for senses, there are thought to be ten Indriyas, five cognitive senses which
give us knowledge about outer world while five are active expressions.

(dekhili panDhari dehee janee vanee, ekaa janaardanee waaree karee)
thus we saw PanDharapura in my body, in the people, in the world -everywhere, eka (ekanatha) the disciple of Janardana thus completes the waari (pilgrimage of PanDharapura).

Translation of Marathi Abhanga 'maajhe maaher panDhari'

One more Abhanga sung by the great Pandita Bhimsen Joshi, written by Saint-poet Ekanatha (wiki article link) composed by Ram Phatak.

PanDhari (panDharaPura) is my mother’s house which is on the banks of BheemA (bheevaraa) river.
-In Indian context maaher (Kannada
ತವರುಮನೆ tavaru mane/ Hindi मायका maayakaa) or mother’s (parent’s place) house has a lot of importance as the girl leaves it for forever and comes to husband’s house –her own house still,, the hometown, the mom’s place remains her special for forever. Sense of belonging is attached with it. So the poet says that PanDharapura, the abode of Lord ViTThala is the maaher for him.

father and mother, is my Vitthala and Rakhumai (Rukmini)

PunDalika stays as my brother, what should I tell about his fame !?
-Bhakta Pundalika is the person whose devotion is said to have brought Lord Vishnu from his abode VaikunTha to PanDharapura in the form of Lord ViTThala.

my sister is ChandrabhagA (river BheemA is called ChandrabhagA in PanDharapura as it’s course takes the shape of moon crescent here), breaks the sins – makes us free of our sins.

ekA (which also means ‘one’) –ekanatha is devoted to/ surrendered to JanArdana (JanArdana Swamy was the guru of Saint Ekanatha, Guru is seen in very high respect in India and thus poet remembers his Guru in each of his compositions), remembering maaher -the mother’s home, PanDharapura.
