Translation of Marathi Abhanga ' je kaa ranjale gaanjale'

The great Abhanga by Santa Tukaarama

(je kaa ranjale gaanjale, tyaasi mhane jo aapule)

one who says his own to the ones who are deprived

(to chi saadhu oLakhaawaa, deva tethechi jaaNaawaa)

Identify him and him only as a saint/seeker , locate the god there only

(mrudu sabahya navaneeta, taise sajjanaanche chitta)

Throughout (out and in) soft like the butter is the mind of the sajjanas (noble/righteous people)

(jyaasi apngita naahi, tyaasi dharee jo hrudayee)

who holds them his heart the ones who have none to rely on

(dayaa karaNe putrasee, te chi daasaa aaNi daasee)

he loves his servants the same way he loves his own kids

(tukaa mhaNe saangu kiti, tyaa chi bhagawantaachyaa murti)

Tukarama says, how much to tell about him, they are the direct images of the god.

Translation of 'kaaya hee panDhari' Abhanga

This is the Abhanga sung by Bhimsen Joshi, written by Santa Ekanatha, in this Abhanga Ekanatha  looks the PanDahri in the world, thus essence of worship and pilgrimage in all walks of daily life.

॥१

(kaaya hee panDhari aatmaa haa viTThala, naandato kewaLa paanDuranga)
this body is PanDhari and soul is ViTThala, dwells only PanDuranga there

(bhaava bhakti bheemaa udka te waahe, barawaa shibhatase paanDuranga)
feelings-devotion s the flowing water of Bheema river, suits the stunning, adorable PanDuranga.

(dayaa kshamaa shaanti hechi waaLuwanTa, miLalase thaaTa vaishnavaanchaa)
compassion, forgiveness, peace is the desert (the sandy ground on the banks of Bheema river in PanDharapur) , we got the honour of being Vaishnava (dedicated to god)

(jnaana dhyaana pooja viveka aananda, haachi veNunaada shobhatase)
knowledge, meditation, worship, thoughtfulness and thus happiness is what is the veNunaada – sound of flute (flute is the instrument lord Krishna plays)

(dasha indriyaanchaa eka meLa kelaa, aisaa gopaaLakaalaa hota ase)
ten Indriyas are brought together and that is the gopaaL-kaala here
(GopaaLakaalaa is the mixture of different food items of different tastes, they are believed to be Lord Krishna’s favourite which he shares with his close friends)

Indriya is the Sanskrt-Yogic term for senses, there are thought to be ten Indriyas, five cognitive senses which
give us knowledge about outer world while five are active expressions.
Read it here.

(dekhili panDhari dehee janee vanee, ekaa janaardanee waaree karee)
thus we saw PanDharapura in my body, in the people, in the world -everywhere, eka (ekanatha) the disciple of Janardana thus completes the waari (pilgrimage of PanDharapura).

Translation - Roopa paahata lochani

The Abhanga I am going to post today is very simple, yet very meaningful! Probably this is the beauty of Santa Sahitya of Marathi that the compositions are very simple and very easy to get but they give us the meaning which we can keep on finding all the way through our actions and thoughts!

This Abhanga penned by Dnyaneshwara is sung by many artists including Bhimsen Joshi, it was used in a movie Shree Santa Nivrutti Dnyanadeva, sung by Asha Bhosale.
All these versions are set in different tunes and each one of them sweet in their own manner!
But personally most I love is sung by Carnatic singer duo Ranjani Gayatri. (posting the links at the bottom of the post)

(roopa paahata lochani। sukha zaale ho saajaNi।)
Seeing the beauty (beautiful form) by my eyes, I got the bliss… o friend
(to haa viTThala barawaato haa maadhava barawa।)
That one Vitthala is beautiful, that one Madhava is beautiful
(bahutaa sukrutachi joDi।mhaNuni viTThali aawaDee।)
Multiplying the good deeds, (then only) thus starts the love for Vitthala
(sava sukhace aagaru। baapa rakhumadevivaru।)
Home of all the bliss, (is) father  Rakhuma Devi’s (Rukmini’s) husband [referring to Vitthala]

Film version by Asha Bhosale composed by legendary composer C. Ramachandra - here

Translation of Marathi Abhanga ' panDhari chaa vaas'

The Abhanga written by one of the greatest and earliest saint poet in Waarakari tradtion, Santa Namadeva (Namdev on wiki), composed by noted Marathi composer Srinivas Khale.

stay in panDhari, bath in Chandrabhaagaa, and the darshana of Lord ViThobaa (ViTThala)

may the same happen to me for this birth and for the births I take in future, there is no other demand o Shrihari (another name of Lord Vishnu)

(may there be) name of lord -nAma always in (my) mouth and darshana of saints, let me get the feeling of being with god (JanArdana) even when I am among the people, the poet probably wants to mean here is that let me see god in the people.

Naama (Namadeva) says always on your great door, may I keep singing keertana of love (song of love)

Translation of Marathi Abhanga 'maajhe maaher panDhari'

One more Abhanga sung by the great Pandita Bhimsen Joshi, written by Saint-poet Ekanatha (wiki article link) composed by Ram Phatak.

PanDhari (panDharaPura) is my mother’s house which is on the banks of BheemA (bheevaraa) river.
-In Indian context maaher (Kannada
ತವರುಮನೆ tavaru mane/ Hindi मायका maayakaa) or mother’s (parent’s place) house has a lot of importance as the girl leaves it for forever and comes to husband’s house –her own house still,, the hometown, the mom’s place remains her special for forever. Sense of belonging is attached with it. So the poet says that PanDharapura, the abode of Lord ViTThala is the maaher for him.

father and mother, is my Vitthala and Rakhumai (Rukmini)

PunDalika stays as my brother, what should I tell about his fame !?
-Bhakta Pundalika is the person whose devotion is said to have brought Lord Vishnu from his abode VaikunTha to PanDharapura in the form of Lord ViTThala.

my sister is ChandrabhagA (river BheemA is called ChandrabhagA in PanDharapura as it’s course takes the shape of moon crescent here), breaks the sins – makes us free of our sins.

ekA (which also means ‘one’) –ekanatha is devoted to/ surrendered to JanArdana (JanArdana Swamy was the guru of Saint Ekanatha, Guru is seen in very high respect in India and thus poet remembers his Guru in each of his compositions), remembering maaher -the mother’s home, PanDharapura.

Sawale sundar Roopa manohara

A very famous Abhanga by 17th century saint poet Tukaram on Shri Vitthala , the main deity of Bhaagavat Sampradaya cult based on Bhakti (devotion) concept.
Beautifully sung by Pt, Bhimsen Joshi, it is one of the most popular Abhangas sung by the legendery singer, presenting the translation of the same in English for the listners who don't understand Marathi,
A small piece of devotion from my side towards Marathi language and Vitthala

(dusky, beautiful look which is really attractive or spellbinding)

(may reside in my heart forever)

(dusky, beautiful look which is really attractive or spellbinding)

(we don't have any other wish nor anything else to care for)

(your name is sweet oh lord Panduranga!)

(dusky, beautiful look which is really attractive or spellbinding)

(in every birth asked for the same to you)

(please give that readily now)

(dusky, beautiful look which is really attractive or spellbinding)

( tuka/tukaram says you are so generous)

 ( - that we can't get {such a generous one} even after searching everything/everywhere)

(dusky, beautiful look which is really attractive or spellbinding)

(may reside in my heart forever)
